It's time for a lot of change at the Philadelphia Union.
New head coach, new playing scheme, several new players. I have nothing against Jim Curtin and I am thankful for all the Union have achieved in recent years. But this model is exhausted. And if ownership won't spend to truly compete, I'd rather see an exciting young team built around the academy - there will be losses aplenty but also plenty of underdog excitement - than watch the same thing produce the same diminishing results over time. It's at the point now where if I watch, it's to get to the point where the game is hopeless and I know I can safely turn it off.
In any form of entertainment, sports, music, visual media - nothing is worse than apathy. And that is mainly what I feel toward the Philadelphia Union these days.
The only thing that will serve as a wake up call to Union ownership is the overall value of their franchise decreasing. Union are closer to becoming San Jose then they are Columbus or Cincinnati because ownership will not do what is necessary to compete in MLS. They are happy to sit back, provide lip service at 'town halls' and watch their asset increase in value.
The town hall was not full of promises of new hires of competitive calibre but was hopeful for some of us.
This is a good assessment but we are, even with current personnel and form, better than some playoff contenders.
Despite the reality check and perhaps despite the ownership, I hope we beat CIN and make a run. The players that have played with heart deserve that (in my mind).
I hope the reality that the 2022 team is over will sink in and changes happen. I don’t mean
get rid of Curtain but I hope to not hear him say “it hurts” again for a good long time.
Gazdag is, sadly, the main player I like to see traded and Bedoya become a full time staff member.
Sugarman's message at the Town Hall was telling. I'm paraphrasing, but that he was "surprised that people were not happy just being a good, well run club." No club/team hangs a banner for being that.
Until ownership is willing to commit resources for having a deeper roster of established first team players, they will continue on this middling trajectory and their season ticket holder base will further erode. I've been a STH since Day 1 and opted to not renew for 2025 because of ownership's position on this.
Well said.
