Sebastien Le Toux Congratulates Daniel Gazdag On Breaking Union Scoring Record
Daniel Gazdag broke Sebastien Le Toux's Union all-time scoring record with his 57th goal in all competitions on Tuesday night.
CHESTER — Sebastien Le Toux’s Philadelphia Union scoring record stood for almost a decade.
For a long time, the club legend was the only one in that stratosphere of the record book.
Over the past few years, Daniel Gazdag and others quickly chased down Le Toux’s scoring mark.
On Tuesday night, Gazdag eclipsed Le Toux with his 57th goal in all competitions for the Philadelphia Union.
“I knew I was going to keep it for a long time because nobody was close. Every record has to be broken one day. I’m glad I’m able to see who is going to beat me,” Le Toux told the Union Soccer Blog before Tuesday’s game.
Gazdag’s record-setting goal came in a losing effort, as the Union fell 3-2 to the Seattle Sounders at Subaru Park.
“It’s obviously a nice number,” Gazdag said. “I’m happy I’m the all-time scoring leader of the club. That’s amazing. When I got here two years ago, I wasn’t even thinking about that. I’m happy with that. I will be happier in the future for sure.”
No one expected Gazdag to come in and chase down Le Toux’s record immediately. After all, at the time of Gazdag’s signing, it was hard to imagine anyone breaking the record.
The Hungarian midfielder made an immediate impact upon his arrival from Honved and impressed Le Toux with his movement inside the 18-yard-box.
“He definitely right away came in and had a great first six months where everything went right,” Le Toux said. “He was in talk for MVP for the league. He definitely brought more quality to the team and brought more scoring. He has a nose to put himself in the right position too. You may not see him for 45-60 minutes, but he can be there to score the goal.”
Le Toux didn’t seem particularly emotional about losing the all-time scoring record. Instead, he took more pride in what he was able to accomplish while in Major League Soccer.
“A lot of people have asked me about it. I feel like records are a very American thing. They love stats in America. Yes, I’m proud of the stats, but when you talk about the stats, I take pride in being the first to score 50,” Le Toux said.
“I think the proudest thing for me is that I got 50 goals and 50 assists. I love to score goals, but in MLS, I’m very proud to be a part of the 50-50 club. It just shows that I was not always selfish, but I like to pass as well. I was as happy to assist as I was to score,” Le Toux continued.
Gazdag could join Le Toux in MLS’ 50-50 club at some point, but the focus for him right now is improving with the Union and making Hungary’s squad for the Euros, something Le Toux is rooting for to happen.
“He has a big thing coming with the Euros and if he wants to make the team he has to put the numbers on the board to impress his coach in Hungary,” Le Toux said. “He’s doing this right now and I hope for him to make it. It would be great to watch the Euros and see a Philadelphia Union player there. I wish that he keeps going and makes the team.”
