Philadelphia Union Start Leagues Cup Knockout Round Against D.C. United
The Union play D.C. for the second time this season on Thursday night in the round of 32.
CHESTER — The Philadelphia Union’s path to a Leagues Cup title is chock full of familiar foes.
The Union play D.C. United on Thursday night in the round of 32. A win would pit them against the New York Red Bulls or New York City FC in the round of 16 on Monday.
“It’s interesting with the way it broke out,” Union head coach Jim Curtin said. “You can say the one side looks a lot stronger with the top Liga MX teams. You see LAFC, Cincinnati over there. Then ours has broken out kind of how the US Open Cup would break out, where it’s us versus DC and next round versus one of the New York teams. It’s a little localized.”
The Union have to play against the opponent they were dealt, and maybe Thursday’s matchup comes with its own motivation since D.C. came into Subaru Park on May 17 and played the Union to a scoreless draw.
