Philadelphia Union Select Three Players in 2024 MLS SuperDraft
The Union chose three players in the second and third rounds of Wednesday's MLS SuperDraft.
The Philadelphia Union had a clear mission with their 2024 MLS SuperDraft picks.
The Union selected players with proven goal-scoring records in the collegiate ranks who they hope can develop into contributors at the MLS level.
Stas Korzeniowski, a forward from Penn, was chosen by the Union with the 53rd overall pick.
Stanford midfielder/forward Zach Bohane was taken with the 63rd overall pick, a selection the Union received from Austin FC as part of the Brandan Craig loan deal.
Goalkeeper Francesco Montali was the team’s other selection at No. 82 overall.
Korzeniowski is a 6’4” forward who scored 20 goals across his three seasons for Penn. He won the 2022 Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year award for scoring 11 times in his sophomore season.
The second-round pick scored six goals and handed out eight assists in his junior campaign with the Quakers.
The timing of Korzeniowski’s selection is a bit funny given the official news of Chris Donovan’s contract extension on Wednesday morning.
The Union are looking to another forward from a local college, this one who a natural draft pick was used on, to build up the depth for Union II and maybe contribute to the first-team roster in the coming years .
Bohane, a 5’10” sophomore midfielder, recorded eight goals and 11 assists for Stanford this season.
The California native broke out on the Pac-12 stage this season after rarely starting in his freshman season.
Montali was a two-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year with Boston University. He could fill the Holden Trent role with Union II depending on what the Union do with their backup goalkeeper situations.
Trent appears to be a contender for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart right now, but Union sporting director Ernst Tanner did not in his end-of-season press conference that the Union are in the market for a backup goalkeeper after Joe Bendik’s contract ended.
All three of the draft picks are expected to start preseason with Union II and play with the MLS Next Pro side in 2024. They will compete with the current U2 players and potential Homegrown signings to impress the coaching staff in preseason.
