Olwethu Makhanya Embracing New Opportunities in Philadelphia Union Defense
The 20-year-old center back talked to Union Soccer Blog about his journey to a starting spot and how he remained positive during tough times.
CHESTER — Olwethu Makhanya had every reason for doubt to creep into his mind that he wouldn’t play a prominent role with the Philadelphia Union.
The South African center-back made his first start for the Union in the 2025 MLS regular-season opener, a year-and-a-half after he initially signed with the club.
“Honestly, before I even came here I experienced some challenges in my career. I always knew that everyone has a different timing,” Makhanya told Union Soccer Blog.
“So when I saw it happening for other people, I took it as a positive message,” he continued. “If they are getting the opportunity, I’m eventually going to get mine. I just have to wait for my turn. That mentality has kept me focused.”
