CHESTER — Jovan Lukic is genuinely happy to be with the Philadelphia Union.

Of course, any new signing would say that about his new club.

But in Lukic’s case, he means it from the bottom of his heart after the experience he went through in the past.

The 23-year-old Serbian midfielder signed for LASK in Austria in 2023, but then was immediately shipped out on loan to Torrense in Portugal. Nine months after that, he signed back home with Spartak Subotica.

Fast forward a year-and-a-half and Lukic is in line to play a key role in Major League Soccer.

“I'm very grateful for these moments, you know, because I learned from those moments the most in my career, in my life as a person, as a football player, soccer player,” Lukic said in his first interview with local media on Thursday.

“I got there (to LASK), and I immediately go to the loan,” Lukic continued. “I was just in a pre season with LASK, and then I go immediately to loan in Portugal, I play (in Portugal), like, okay, not nothing, like, wow, I can say, like, special, but everything was fine. And I had, at the end, I extended the contract with the Portuguese team for one more year. And then I had some problems, not like, personal, not like, nothing like that, some different kind of things. And that's the reason I came back to Serbia. Then I played there one and a half year, and I’m here now.”
