Joaquin Torres Rescues Win For Philadelphia Union
The Argentinian's first goal for the Philadelphia Union powered them past the Chicago Fire on a night where Andre Blake left with an injury.
CHESTER - The Philadelphia Union went after Joaquin Torres for games like Saturday night.
Torres provided the lone goal in a 1-0 win over the Chicago Fire to rescue three points on a night where a lot of things went wrong for Jim Curtin’s men.
“He’s a game-changer,” Curtin said. “You can see when he gets on the ball the defense drops back usually. Credit to him for making a big play. He and Andres (Perea) are starters on 99 percent of MLS teams. They are starting quality players. I keep telling them to be patient. They are going to get opportunities and do big things for us tonight. Joaquin stepped up in a big way for us tonight to get that goal.”
Torres entered in the 61st minute, 11 minutes after former Union midfielder Fabian Herbers was sent off for his second yellow card.
After the Fire went down to 10 men, they bunkered into two banks of four and had Kei Kamara operate on his lonesome.
Chicago’s game plan to hold on to a point almost worked, but then Torres uncorked a shot from just outside the box that took a slight deflection on its way past Chris Brady.
